Objective: High School Physical Education
1.3.3 Exhibit advanced offensive, defensive and transition strategies in a variety of physical activities
Title: Pigskin Playbook
Whole Class with One Computer -Description: The teacher will have a projection of the computer so that everyone can see it clearly. The teacher will have videos of different types of offenses, defenses, and even some special teams from a variety of football games. The teacher will go through and explain the differences between all of the play types on offense and the differences of the coverages and blitzes on defense. Also the class will be taught the fundamentals and goals of each special team. Once the teacher has taught the class the basics, then they will watch a football highlight reel of many different games, but the students will have to write down what they think the coverage was and what the offense was trying to do by the play call that was called. At the end of the lesson, the students will complete a coverage recognition worksheet that show the different coverages.
-Materials: A computer, a projector to see the computer, football film, highlight films, pencil, coverage recognition worksheet, this video will be shown- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOgLj4ruQk8
-Before Class Preparation- I will be sure to have all of the videos loaded for the class to see without wait. I will also have the worksheet created for the class to complete. I will make sure the projector is set up for all to see and if one person cannot see it very well i will move them to the front of the classroom.
-During Class Preparation- I will need to make sure they stay attentive during the video. I will pass out the worksheet before the video and my game plan talk so that they can take notes. A challenge would be to keep all the students that are uninterested in football paying attention.
-Backup Plan: My back up plan will use some of the highlight film DVDs that i had of me in high school and teach off of that, or I can always use a dry erase board and then practice it on the field.
Individual Use in the Computer Lab
-Description: The students will create their own playbook (just formations and maybe simple plays) using the shapes and objects tool on Powerpoint. They will need to have reasonable names that are easy to remember and need to learn all the basic coverages and blitzes on defense. The teacher will start the class off by demonstrating the process and show them other teams to get ideas from. Each person will make 10 offenses plays and 5 defensive plays. Once everyone is finished, they will print their playbooks out and we will make a class playbook.
-Materials: Computer Lab, this website- http://www.winningyouthfootball.com/ , PowerPoint, Folder to make team playbook, paper, printer, ink, video search of football offenses
-Before Class Preparation: I will have the website that they need to go to and the instructions written on the board. I will also have Powerpoint loaded on each computer. I will create a rubric for the guidelines and expectations of the students. If a special needs student is struggling i will pair him with a higher level student so that he/she can help.
-During Class Preparation: I will go over the rubric, show them an example on Powerpoint, and then tell them get to work. I will then walk around and answer any appropriate question that is asked. A problem could be that all the students get stuck at once and it slows the process down. Another thing that could be bad is people who don't ever play football might be confused. Monitor the use of the internet by the students and make sure they stay on task is key.
-Backup Plan: Instead of using Powerpoint to create the playbook, each student will use their own personal notebook and do the same idea. Only this time, I will do all the explaining on what a formation is and what not.
